Abstract

The concept of "social capital" has been widely used in fields such as economy, politics, society and increasingly appeared in research works  on community-based tourism (CBT).  Community awareness and social structure  are considered  essential factors for individuals in this community to accept the impacts of tourism activities and participate in tourism development. Through the case study of Thuy Thanh commune with secondary data and in-depth interview data from 23 residents, 3 local government representatives and 1 NGOs representative, this study focuses on understanding the local community participation in tourism development as well as analyzing the relationship between components of social capital (including social networks, trust, and norms of reciprocity) and this participation. The results are synthesized by proposing a theoretical model related to the research problem and management implications  for improving the social capital of Thuy Thanh community when participating in tourism development.
