Abstract

A method of determining the concentration of s-lactic acid using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was developed. The method used a HIQSIL 100 C18 column (Length: 250 mm, Diameter: 4.6 mm, Particle size: 5 μm) with potassium dihydrogen phosphate as a mobile phase. The separation was performed using a UV detector at 210 nm wavelength. The flow rate was kept at 1mL/min and the injection volume was 20 μL. The results showed that the linearity was in the range 0-180 ppm, and the correlation coefficient was found to be (R2= 0.999). The limit of detection was 1.15 ppm, and the limit of quantification was 3.79 ppm. The mean recoveries were from 95% to 99%, and the repeatability RSD was 2.87%. The method was used to determine the s-lactic acid concentrations from the fermentation of aloe veragel. The method seems to be accurate, precise, simple and economical.
