Trong hai thập kỷ vừa qua, marketing xanh (green marketing) đã trở thành một chủ đề được quan tâm trên toàn cầu. Tuy nhiên, hoạt động marketing này ở Việt Nam vẫn còn khá vắng bóng trên cả hai phương diện học thuật và ứng dụng thực tiễn. Nguyên nhân của hiện tượng trên bắt nguồn từ sự thiếu hụt về nền tảng lý thuyết. Vận dụng các điểm mạnh của phương pháp phân tích nội dung trong nghiên cứu tổng quan, nhóm tác giả đã khảo sát 109 bài báo khoa học bằng ngôn ngữ Anh từ các tạp chí quốc tế thuộc cơ sở dữ liệu Science Citation Index. Kết quả nghiên cứu đã làm sáng tỏ được sự thay đổi của marketing xanh trên nhiều phương diện như giá trị lý luận, phương pháp tiếp cận cùng các nội dung nghiên cứu được mở rộng trong giai đoạn 1998–2018. Công trình cũng đề xuất một số hướng nghiên cứu phù hợp với bối cảnh của Việt Nam hiện nay nhằm mở rộng hơn công tác nghiên cứu marketing xanh trong nước, từ đó bắt kịp với xu hướng nghiên cứu quốc tế.
